The Washington Nationals release Felipe Lopez and Paul LoDuca
The Nationals tried furiously to trade both of these players yesterday but since they didn’t get a bite they cut them both. Felipe Lopez played in 100 games this season for the Nationals and he was 76 for 325 (.234 avg, .619 OPS) with 34 runs scored, 2 homers, 25 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. You could see the handwriting on the wall for something like this to happen to Lopez when the Nationals’ extended Christian Guzman’s contract and acquired 2B Emilio Bonifacio from the D-Backs for Jon Rauch. Lopez will likely have no problem finding a new job. The Baltimore Orioles will likely be a team very interested in his services. Paul LoDuca was injured much of this season and lost his catching gig to Jesus Flores when he was out. LoDuca played in 46 games this season for the Nationals and he was 32 for 139 (.230 avg, .582 OPS) with 13 runs scored and 12 RBIs. The Florida Marlins and Houston Astros will probably take a long look at signing him.
