The Washington Nationals should be calling the Los Angeles Angels

The Los Angeles Angels need help in the bullpen so the Nationals should offer them either Saul Rivera or Jason Bergmann for 26-year old righty swinging catcher Bobby Wilson. Wilson was the #13 rated prospect in the Angels’ minor league system heading into last season according to Baseball America. But, he is blocked behind Mike Napoli and Jeff Mathis with the Angels. With that in mind this kind of a trade makes perfect sense to both teams. Wilson is good enough to battle Jesus Flores for the starting job if he is healthy when spring training begins. Come on Nationals, get this done.

The Washington Nationals could be in a spending mood this winter

The Nationals have five free agents this winter and they will likely let them all walk. Josh Bard, Dmitri Young, Austin Kearns, Livan Hernandez and Julian Tavarez will all be getting paychecks from different cities next year. The Nationals really need to sign three veteran starting pitchers to give them a legit pitching staff and money should not be an object. John Lackey, Tim Hudson (if Atlanta lets him go), Andy Pettitte, Randy Wolf, Jon Garland and Joel Pineiro should be the top targets of the Nationals this winter. The other starting pitchers on the Nationals’ radar should be Braden Looper (if the Brewers let him go), Jason Marquis, Vicente Padilla, Carl Pavano, Brad Penny, Erik Bedard, Doug Davis, Jarrod Washburn, Rich Harden, Brett Myers, Justin Duchscherer and Jose Contreras. The Nationals need to rebuild the bullpen from the right side so look for them to have interest in signing guys like David Weathers, Danys Baez, Rafael Betancourt (if the Rockies let him go), Octavio Dotel, LaTroy Hawkins, Bobby Howry, Brandon Lyon, Guillermo Mota, Chan Ho Park or Russ Springer. The Nationals also need an upgrade at backup catcher behind Jesus Flores. They should consider bringing in one of the following: Henry Blanco, Jason Kendall, Jason LaRue, Jose Molina, Mike Redmond, Yorvit Torrealba or Gregg Zaun. It’s time for the Nationals to get into the game and try to contend…..and that costs money so it’s time to pony up.

The Washington Nationals will be cutting their ties with Austin Kearns

The Nationals will be giving 29-year old righty swinging outfielder $1 million bucks to get out of town instead of giving him $10 million bucks to stay in 2010. This was one of ex-GM Jim Bowden’s biggest blunders as Kearns just isn’t that much of a player. He played in 80 games for the Nationals last season and he was 34 for 174 (.195 avg, .641 OPS) with 20 runs scored, 3 homers and 17 RBIs. Kearns played 4 years for the Nationals and he appeared in 390 games in which he was 311 for 1,286 (.242 avg, .723 OPS) with 177 runs scored, 34 homers and 159 RBIs. He might have a hard time finding a job unless he’s willing to sign a minor league deal.

UPDATE: The Nationals have declined the 2010 option on Austin Kearns’ contract making him a free agent.
