The Washington Nationals have placed 23-year old switch-hitting catcher Sandy Leon on the 60-day disabled list due to a high ankle sprain suffered in his major league debut last night. Leon went 0 for 1 with a whiff before getting injured. The Nationals have called up 33-year old righty swinging catcher Carlos Maldonado to back up Jesus Flores. Maldonado played in 21 games in AAA-ball so far this year and he was 15 for 71 (.211 avg, .653 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 2 homers and 6 RBIs. Maldonado last played with the Nationals in 2010. He has played in 25 games in his first three years in the majors and he is 10 for 54 (.185 avg, .645 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 3 homers, 7 RBIs and 1 stolen base. This is a bad break for Leon.

Ramos has played in 25 games for the Nationals so far this year and he is 22 for 83 (.265 avg, .752 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 3 homers and 10 RBIs. 27-year old righty swinging catcher Jesus Flores is going to replace Ramos in the starting lineup. He has played in 241 games in his first five years with the Nationals and he is 174 of 695 (.250 avg, .689 OPS) with 62 runs scored, 17 homers and 105 RBIs. The Nationals are going to call up 23-year old switch-hitting catcher Sandy Leon to share time behind the plate with Flores. Leon came into this season as the Nationals’ #24 prospect according to Baseball America. Leon played in 27 games in AA-ball this year for the Nationals and he was 30 for 94 (.319 avg, .814 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 1 homer and 12 RBIs. Rodriguez has pitched in 9 games (0 starts) for the Nationals so far this year and he is 0-1 with 5 saves, a 0.00 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP. He has only given up 1 hit while whiffing 10 batters in only 8 1/3 innings, showing just how dominating he has been. But, he needs to tighten up his control a little bit as he has walked 6 batters so far this year, but that is nitpicking. Rodriguez has pitched in 100 games (0 starts) in his first four years in the majors and he is 4-4 with 7 saves, a 3.49 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. The Nationals hope that Rodriguez keeps up the good work going forward.
